The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duan Yang Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is one of the four major traditional Chinese festivals, along with the Spring Festival, the Qingming Festival, and the Mid - Autumn Festival.
Origins
The most famous story about the festival is related to Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet in the state of Chu during the Warring States period. When he realized the decline of Chu was beyond recovery, he threw himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Local people rushed to the river to search for his body. They also threw zongzi into the river to keep fish and turtles from devouring Qu Yuan's body. Later, the customs of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi on this day were passed down to commemorate this patriotic poet.
Customs
  • Dragon Boat Racing: It is the most important activity of the Dragon Boat Festival. During the races, dragon boat teams paddle hurriedly, accompanied by the sound of beating drums. It is said that the winning team will lead a happy life in the following year.
  • Eating Zongzi: Zongzi is an indispensable food for the Dragon Boat Festival. In the past, every family would soak glutinous rice, prepare reed leaves, and wrap the rice around sweet fillings such as jujube and bean paste or savory ones like fresh meat or ham, and tie them into pyramidal shapes.
  • Other Customs: There are also some other customs, such as hanging calamus and moxa, which are believed to ward off evil. Drinking realgar wine is also a traditional practice, which is said to drive away evil spirits and pests. Besides, children often wear sachets, which are filled with cinnabar, realgar, and fragrant herbs, with the meaning of avoiding evil and preventing diseases.
